Simon Gauthier and his band of 12 hotshot skiers from Quebec - known locally as the Frenchies, have set a new vertical record at Mustang for one day of cat skiing 23,949 feet skied. The skiing was epic, with waist deep snow and tons of face-shots.
Mustang Powder is located near Revelstoke, BC in the Northern Monashee mountains - a range known as one of the best places in the world for consistently great powder snow. Because the Monashees are an interior range we are blessed with light, dry powder, and due to the Pacific storm patterns we also receive much bigger dumps of snow than the ranges to the East, such as the Selkirks, Purcells or the Rockies. Mount Copeland, which is adjacent to the Mustang Lodge, holds the Canadian record for the greatest snowfall in one season at 24.5 metres. That’s over 80 feet of snow in one season - think of all those face shots!
Once you experience catskiing or cat-boarding in British Columbia with Mustang Powder, you'll know why so many guests make plans to return the following season before they have even left. Snowcat skiing has evolved into an experience that compares in quality and quantity with heli-skiing, long alpine runs, and some of the best tree-skiing around. With our powerful high speed Piston Bully 300 and 600 snowcats we typically ski 18,000 - 20,000 vertical feet per day, our record is 23,949. That means well over 100,000 vertical feet per week – for an affordable price of $600 to $950 Canadian per day.
In 2010/2011 we added a "Small Groups, Steep Chutes" program to the roster - a third snowcat with only 6 guests skiing big, steep, challenging and interesting runs, with some ski touring thrown in as well. The program was a great success and will be back again this year. Find out more on our Small Groups - Steep Chutes page.
Please be aware that even in the regular cat skiing program our policy at Mustang Powder is to cater to the strong, keen skiers/boarders. You should be an expert skier, or at a minimum a very strong Intermediate. All boarders and telemarkers MUST be experts, and very fit. Less skilled or less fit guests may be asked to sit out some of the steeper runs and/or take some rest breaks by riding down in the front of the snowcat with the driver.
Our ACMG certified ski guides will help create your personal cat skiing or snowboarding adventure. They will guide you through our terrain, and find you deep untracked fluffy powder. With miles of open and tree studded terrain it’s more than likely that you’ll have the best run of your life - time and time again. Oh, and don't forget - as you're skiing hard all day, the staff at the Mustang Powder Lodge will be working hard so you can kick back and relax in the evenings!
