Two Different Ski Programs

 

 

At Mustang Powder our philosophy is to get as much skiing as possible every single day.  We are able to provide our guests with heli-skiing quality terrain as well as a lot of vertical; but we can do it at cat skiing prices and with the reliability of cat skiing.  This means that we don’t have ‘down days’, we always ski.  WIth over 30,000 acres of terrain, 250 km. of snowcat roads and significantly more snow than most other heli and cat skiing operations, we don’t have to ‘farm’ and conserve snow.  During long dry spells, we are still able to provide untracked powder skiing because we have tons of north aspect and alpine terrain which typically stays in good condition.

 

We offer two programs to our guests:

 

1. The Big Vertical Program:    This is the program which we have been using for years at Mustang.  It consists of an early start in the morning – with the snowcat leaving the lodge at 8:30 AM (on Cloudy days in December and January we will leave the lodge at 8:45 due to the lack of daylight prior to that) and returning at approx. 4:30 PM.  We don’t stop for lunch (guests can eat at their leisure on the cat rides).  During this 8 hour day we typically do 15-20,000 vertical feet of powder skiing/snowboarding.  Our drop-off and pick-up procedures are smooth and efficient – this results in us getting a lot of skiing each day.

 

 

2. The Extremely Big Vertical Program:     This is a program at Mustang Powder that is aimed at strong and fit groups of skiers who are keen to do an extra long day skiing fast and hard.  In this program we typically ski more than 20,000 vertical feet each day. For these groups we will also start at 8:30 – but will ski to 5:00-5:15 PM – meaning an 8 ½ + hour day.  This program focuses on total efficiency, which means quick loading and unloading of the cats, no rushing, but no dilly-dallying around either.  The longer days and the faster turn arounds  will result in about 3000 vertical feet more skiing each day.  Guests will be obligated to be punctual in the mornings for the 8:30 start – but can sit out runs if the pace is too fast for them.

The beauty of cat skiing is that we can easily accommodate skiers/snowboarders of various skill and fitness levels.  Although the snowcats in both the above programs go at a brisk pace and for long days, guests are always able to ride down in the snowcat on some runs in order to conserve energy.  The Extremely Big Vert option is available at no extra cost, but is only open to groups that fill the whole snowcat, and from late January until the end of the season – since we need longer daylight hours and really smooth cat roads in order to do this program.
